Tamashima distrct was formerly the sea. Lord Mzutani of the domain of Bichu Matsuyama reclaimed the area first in1658, and opened a port between Otoshima and Kashiwajima, so that Tamashima propred as a port during the Edo preid. The granaries and all-night stone lanterns have been preserved, maintaining the atmosphere of those times.
~Κ`Entsuji Temple`
Entsuji is famous for the fact that the Priest Ryokan trained here for about 18 years. This historic temple of the Soto-sect is said to have beem founded by the Priest gyoki. It comprises a main hall, "Ryokan" hall and the like. Its vicinity has been arranged as a park which was designated as a Scenic Site of Okayama in 1959.

ΓνκΥ`Genpei Old battle Field`
In 1183 the clan of Genji took up their position at Otoshima while the clan of Heike took it up at Kashiwajima, putting the present Tamashima Bridge beetween them. They fought intensely with each other around Tamashima Port and the battle is known for the fact that it was the Heike's last victory.

MΨΰZξiΌuΰj`Yunoki House`
formerly, the Yunoki Family served the lord of Bitchu Matsuyama as "Shoya"(equivalent to a present-day village chief). Yunoki house is said to have been built in the late 18th century and is preserved in its original state. The splasj of blood still remains on the ceiling of the room where Ataka Kumada, the highest-class retainer committed suicide by sword after the Toba-Fushimi Civil War.

This street originating in front of the Haguro Shrine in the center of downtown Tamashima and running westward, is named "Shinmachi-dori". Along the street stand traditional houses and ware houses.

Toshima Shrine
Otoshima was formerly called Toshima. The Toshima Shrine Stands at Yabugahana where many deities are enshrined, including Amateras-ohmikami (the sun). A spectacular festival is held on the last Saturday and Sunday in October with a lot of gorgeous Senzairaku(local portable shrines).
